Health food has been all the craze lately, as we have witnessed a rise in fitness and nutrition among not only Chicagoans, but nationwide. According to recent reports by Food Safety News, chia seeds have been found to be infected with salmonella across the nation. Since May alone, there have been over 65 cases of salmonella infections in 12 U.S. states and in Canada linked to chia seeds products. A total of eight people have been hospitalized as well. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this is the first time that chia seeds have been found to transmit salmonella.

This number includes 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths. Typical symptoms include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain within 12 to 72 hours after infection and lasting between four to seven days. At times, this infection can spread from the intestines to the blood stream and other locations in the both, which can cause serious injury or death.
