Four-Vehicle Crash in Chicago Injures Seven

According to NBC Chicago, a multi-vehicle crash occurred, leaving at least seven people with personal injuries. The accident occurred on Chicago’s west side and involved four motor vehicles. Authorities are currently investigating as to whether this crash was alcohol-related.

The motor vehicle accident occurred on the 1500 block of West Chicago Avenue. One car was heading eastbound at a very high speed and rear-ended another vehicle. This collision then resulted in a chain-reaction of crashes of two other cars. Four vehicles over all were severely damaged from the crash. Seven people were taken to local hospitals. The speeding driver was taken into custody, and further investigations are still ongoing.

According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s 2013 Illinois DUI Fact Book , “driving under the influence” is defined as operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or other intoxicating drugs. The legal limit in which one is deemed intoxicated is a blood-alcohol concentration of .08. One drink takes an hour for the body to absorb, and it takes approximately three drinks per hour to reach a BAC of .08. Many people do not go out for just an hour at a time, but will be out late into the evening on the weekend. Consider the significant negative consequences that an entire night out on the town drinking can pose, especially if someone is consistently having three or more drinks per hour.

The same fact book also provides some Illinois DUI facts. In 2011, 323 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related car accidents. This was 35% of the total 918 car accident fatalities in Illinois for that year, so alcohol is a major fact in motor vehicle accident fatalities. 38,704 DUI arrests were recorded by the Secretary of State’s office. Furthermore, the punishments are severe for drinking and driving. 92% of drivers arrested for DUIs lost their driving privileges.
