Chicago Planned Parenthood Facing Second Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Planned Parenthood is facing a wrongful death lawsuit from the father of a young child whose mother died during a July 2012 abortion that was being performed at a clinic at 18 S. Michigan Avenue. This is the second wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of the victim’s estate. The first was filed by the victim’s mother in August 2012. The victim, a 24-year-old young woman, was receiving an abortion procedure when she began hemorrhaging during the procedure. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she later died from her injuries. An autopsy performed by the medical examiner’s office found that she died of a hemorrhage following a cervical dilation and evacuation performed during an intrauterine pregnancy, and ruled the death an accident.

The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, claims that the clinic “improperly performed” the procedure and failed to properly care for the resulting complications which caused her death at Northwestern Memorial later that day. The lawsuit seeks over $250,000 in damages from the clinic and hospital for the victim’s minor son. When the victim died, a representative from Planned Parenthood said this about her death, “[w]hile legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies.”

Our Chicago medical malpractice attorneys have significant experience representing the families of victims who have been injured by the negligent acts of healthcare providers. Our attorneys have worked for over two decades representing our clients that have been injured or killed by the negligent acts of medical professionals including doctors, nurses, and hospitals. When healthcare professionals make careless mistakes while caring for their patients, the injured parties can often file a medical malpractice lawsuit. Our medical malpractice team of attorneys has filed numerous medical malpractice lawsuits on behalf of our clients and their families. The result is that we have recovered over $420 million in verdicts and settlements for our clients, and continue to work hard to protect our injured clients interests in the courtroom.

In fact, we recovered a $7.62 million dollar verdict against an HMO doctor who disregarded a mother’s complaints of postpartum bleeding, which resulted in her bleeding to death. We also recovered a $17.7 million dollar settlement for a former police officer who suffered a life-altering brain injury as a result of nursing staff negligence at a Chicago hospital. These are just two examples of our prolific medical malpractice history.
