Alsip Car Crash Reminds Us of Motor Vehicle Safety in 2013

The Chicago Tribune reports that a car crash in Alsip, Illinois has left two persons in critical condition. The accident occurred on January 12, 2013 when they rear-ended a semitrailer-truck, trapping their Ford Taurus underneath the back of the semitrailer. The injured include a 32-year-old Chicago resident and a 37-year-old woman from Oak Forest. They are both in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. This is just the latest tragic report of inattention or negligence causing a severe motor vehicle accident.

The Illinois Department of Transportation or IDOT recorded 952 fatalities in 2012, which is up at least 9 percent over the year before. Additionally, we have already had 26 fatalities in the first 20 days of 2013. That’s more than one person a day dying on our roads. We have to be more careful. Negligent and distracted drivers are the cause of a significant portion of our Illinois roadway deaths. Our Chicago accident attorneys understand the need for more caution on our roads.

One of the ways that IDOT recommends driving safely this winter is to winterize your vehicle. This includes checking your tires, ensuring that you have working windshield wipers, lights, and properly inflated tires and proper fluid levels. These small steps can make all the difference this winter while out on our roads.

IDOT reminds drivers of the most basic car safety rules. For example, must wear a seatbelt. This is a very simple way to help keep yourself and your loved ones safe on our roads. Additionally, it is especially important to be aware of the weather conditions while driving. If it is slippery, slow down and increase your following distance. Always leave yourself plenty of room to slow down and stop for traffic to avoid rear-ending the vehicle in front of you. Some of the slickest spots are on or under bridges, overpasses, curves, and shaded areas.

Finally, while so far we have not experienced much snow, be aware that when a snowplow is heading your way, allow it plenty of room to pass by you, always pass any snow plows with care and do so only when you can see the road ahead of the truck.

Motor vehicle accidents are devastating and life altering for everyone involved. Safety on our Illinois roadways is an important and under-recognized issue in our state. We all have to pitch in to make it safer to drive. Unfortunately you cannot always guard against the negligence of others. When you are injured in a car accident caused by the negligence of a third party, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. We have significant experience in obtaining verdicts and settlements for our clients and their families who have been injured by the negligence of another driver, and we continue to provide representation for the victims of roadway negligence in Illinois.
