West Rogers Park Hit-And-Run Leaves Three Critically Injured

High numbers of hit-and-run motor vehicle crashes exemplify not only negligent driving on the road, but lack of driver responsibility for victims and those affected by their negligent driving. Unfortunately, the number of hit-and-run crashes is increasing in major cities, like Chicago. According to USA Today, in 2011 (the most recent year for these statistics), there were 1,449 hit-and-run crashes. This is a 13.7% increase over the three previous years. Numbers are currently estimated to be continuing in increase.

These rising numbers impacting major cities include our hometown of Chicago. According to the Chicago Tribune, on December 23rd, a Chicago family of three fell victim to a hit-and-run crash. Chicago police currently have a suspect in custody after this accident that occurred in the West Rogers Park neighborhood. The victims had been crossing Devon Avenue, just west of Western Avenue, when they were hit by a driver who then left the scene of the accident.

While the driver, still to be held accountable, was uninjured and fled the scene, the three victims were left in critical condition. With no driver to held responsible, this family is suffering serious personal injuries as well as high hospital stay and medical care costs. Hospital stays are extremely costly. Here, where the cause of this family’s hardship fled the accident, the family is likely bearing most of this financial hardship on top of their current personal injuries. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, in 2010 alone, the average cost per hospital stay in the United States was $9,700.

Hit and run crashes are extremely serious because they involve an incident where a negligent driver is trying to both avoid accountability and avoid helping the victims where the driver was the cause of their peril.
