Rockford Hit and Run Leaves One Killed and One Injured

According to an article by USA Today, the incidence of hit and run crashes is increasing in major cities. Being a major metropolitan city, Chicagoans frequently hear or read about hit and run accidents in local news. Hit and run accidents have been on the rise as data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows an upward trend. The country’s number of fatal hit and run accidents has increased from 1274 in 2009, to 1393 in 2010, to 1449 in 2011. This is a 13.7% increase in this three year period, 2011 being the most recent year for available statistics.

Furthermore, according to the same article, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that one in five of all pedestrian fatalities are caused by hit and runs. 60% of hit and run fatalities include pedestrian victims too. Alcohol has been found to be a major factor in this negligent and reckless driving.

Recently in Rockford, according to the Rockford Register Star, a visiting worker from China was killed and his colleague was injured in a hit and run accident. They were among a group of men on a business trip in Illinois. While walking toward their hotel along East State Street, an SUV hit them west of the I-90 overpass. This is especially alarming, because in 2013 alone, Rockford has experienced seven fatal hit and run crashes.

Hit and run crashes are extremely serious because they involve an incident where a negligent driver is trying to both avoid accountability and avoid helping the victims where the driver was the cause of their peril.
