The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Planned Parenthood is facing a wrongful death lawsuit from the father of a young child whose mother died during a July 2012 abortion that was being performed at a clinic at 18 S. Michigan Avenue. This is the second wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of the victim’s estate. The first was filed by the victim’s mother in August 2012. The victim, a 24-year-old young woman, was receiving an abortion procedure when she began hemorrhaging during the procedure. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she later died from her injuries. An autopsy performed by the medical examiner’s office found that she died of a hemorrhage following a cervical dilation and evacuation performed during an intrauterine pregnancy, and ruled the death an accident.
The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, claims that the clinic “improperly performed” the procedure and failed to properly care for the resulting complications which caused her death at Northwestern Memorial later that day. The lawsuit seeks over $250,000 in damages from the clinic and hospital for the victim’s minor son. When the victim died, a representative from Planned Parenthood said this about her death, “[w]hile legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies.”

In fact, we recovered a $7.62 million dollar verdict against an HMO doctor who disregarded a mother’s complaints of postpartum bleeding, which resulted in her bleeding to death. We also recovered a $17.7 million dollar settlement for a former police officer who suffered a life-altering brain injury as a result of nursing staff negligence at a Chicago hospital.
