Chicago Expressway Accidents Kill Two Men in Two Weeks

The Dan Ryan Expressway has proven to be a very dangerous expressway in the past two weeks. The Chicago Sun-Times sadly reported that one man died on November 10th and another on November 18th in early morning crashes on the Dan Ryan. One of the accidents involved alcohol while the other is still being investigated.

The first of the fatal accidents occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th. The two-truck crash happened in the southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan at 95th Street, reports the Sun-Times. The responsible party was driving a GMC pickup truck in the rightmost lane of the five-lane expressway when he swerved across the other lanes and hit a Chevy truck in the leftmost lane. This rash and negligent act caused the trucks to hit the median and then crash into another barrier. The victim, a 21-year-old male, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:05 a.m. The responsible driver was uninjured. Illinois police believe that the responsible driver was intoxicated and have filed charges against him.

The second fatal accident occurred Sunday morning around 4:20 a.m. also on the Dan Ryan Expressway. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that one person died and four others were injured after this latest crash. The accident occurred around in the northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan near 26th Street and involved five people. A minivan carrying just the driver was stopped in traffic while traveling in the express lanes on the Dan Ryan near 26th Street when it was rear-ended by a Chevy Uplander carrying three passengers and the driver. The Chevy then struck the right barrier wall and rolled over, killing a 32-year old male passenger. The remaining four victims were critically injured and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and John H. Stroger Hr. Hospital in Cook County. The driver of the minivan that was rear-ended sustained non-life threatening injuries. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing and no charges have been filed.

Drivers must remain aware at all times, especially late at night and in the early morning hours.
