Several Chicago-area motor vehicle accidents result in deaths, injuries

Over the past few days, several individuals received personal injuries and some unfortunately passed away after several individual Illinois motor vehicle accidents in the south suburban areas of Chicago. A teenager from a south suburb of Chicago died after he lost control of a sports utility vehicle that he was driving near the Illinois city of Country Club Hills. In addition to the Orland Park seventeen year old who passed away in the SUV accident, three other youths received personal injuries. The teenager was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle; there was no indication that alcohol or any other drugs were involved in the deadly motor vehicle accident.

Further, on Sunday night, a speeding vehicle struck and killed a teen bicyclist in Dolton, Illinois. The Dolton driver that caused the Illinois wrongful death has continued to elude police and was eluding police when he was speeding and struck the teenager.

Another individual received serious personal injuries after a south side motor vehicle accident on Monday. The injuries occurred after the motorcycle accident victim crashed his motorcycle on outbound interstate 57 at 127th Street in Illinois. Around the same time in another South Side suburban neighborhood, Country Club Hills, a Mexican restaurant was hit by a car and received extensive property damage.

Additionally, an Orland Park man who was involved in a motor vehicle accident a year ago died over the weekend from his personal injuries. He was involved in a motorcycle accident last August on I-355 at Interstate 88; an autopsy revealed that the motorcycle victim died of cerebral injuries.

More information about the serious Illinois motor vehicle accidents is available at The Southtown Star.

Governor signs Illinois bicycle safety law

Yesterday at Campbell Street Bicycle Shop in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed Illinois bicycle safety legislation into law designed to better protect bicyclists in the state. League of Illinois Bicyclists executive director says that the bills will help both motorists and bicyclists do their parts in sharing our roadways safely. According to the group, the bill will establish new penalties for motorists that drive recklessly or unnecessarily close to bicyclists. A second piece of Illinois legislation will create “Share the Road” Illinois license plates, the money from which will fund bicycle safety campaigns. Illinois Governor Quinn states that the new laws will keep bicyclists safe and remind drivers to be alert for bicyclists.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) addressed bicycle safety in a website entitled “safe riding tips.” The safe riding tips address ways to avoid bicycle injuries. Before using a bike, one should always make sure that it is ready to ride. The NHTSA says to remember to wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet, adjust the bicycle to fit, check equipment, see and be seen, control the bicycle, watch for and avoid road hazards, and avoid riding at night. Another issue, especially important to Chicago bicycle riders, is to always follow the rules of the road. Bicycles are considered vehicles. With the rights of a bicycle ride, bicyclists have the same responsibilities to follow the rules of the road as motorists. Illinois bicyclists are expected to go with the traffic flow, obey traffic laws, yield to traffic when appropriate, be predictable, stay alert at all times, look before turning, and watch for parked cars.

Local Teacher Killed in Logan Square Bicycle Accident

A schoolteacher died in a Chicago bicycle accident yesterday in Logan Square. She was riding on Kedzie Avenue when she was struck fatally on her bicycle by a car. This is the second bicycle related death in Logan Square in the past ten days. Another cyclist was killed in a bicycle accident when he attempted to make a left turn in front of a car. This unfortunate bicycle accident shows that there are dangers to riding bicycles in Chicago that cyclists should know about. Chicago attorneys Levin & Perconti file personal injury lawsuit against town

Steven Levin and Michael Bonamarte of Levin & Perconti have recently filed a lawsuit against the town of Cicero, Illinois on behalf of a woman severely injured in a bicycle accident caused by a depression in the sidewalk. The woman turned around to warn her two daughters, one who has special needs, about the depression in the poorly maintained sidewalk when the accident occurred. The woman fractured her left wrist, was unable to work and care for her daughters, incurred hospital, medical and related expenses, and has suffered pain, disability, disfigurement, and physical and emotional trauma. The town and park district failed to maintain the sidewalk or warn pedestrians and bicyclists about the depression.
